Hey everyone , thank you !
I think the decision has been made .
The consensus seems to be :
1.) While there will be very few potential problems with putting fixed-cogs , with or without bottom bracket lock-rings , onto a rear hub threaded for single-speed freewheels . . . ESPECIALLY on a road bicycle with front and rear caliper brakes . . .
2.) There will be even FEWER potential problems with putting single-speed freewheels onto a rear hub threaded for fixed-cogs .
So , I think I'm going to go for a Phil Wood , "fixed-fixed" , rear hub .
Since people tell me that using a freewheel on such a hub will NOT cause problems , the only negative aspects I can think of are :
1.) Having the outer threads of your freewheel , hanging out in the open air , does not look very elegant .
2.) The recessed space , where those threads are hanging out into the open air , above the unused lock-ring threads of the hub , seems likely to be a perfect place for mud-dirt-sand-grit-grease-grime to accumulate .
