One good way to avoid such a scam is to only accept "Postal" money orders, whether it be a USPS money order or an International Postal Money Order. If you check with the Post Office, they can tell you which country's they honor. These are cashed at the post office for cash in hand, no waiting period, you know if it's good imediately. Beware of the same type of scam on PayPal, there has been a few cases were a buyer severely overpaid, then simply asked for a refund, only to find that the E-check or initial payment was bogus. By the time you realize that the payment was a fraud, you would have already sent your real "refund" back to the scam artist. I just read about this about a week ago, local Police had cracked a group running such a scam here in NJ.

will recieve an offer for purchase at an exorbitant price, but payment will
be made by cashiers check that may be a forgery. If they offer to send you
additional money that you are to forward to another party via Western Union,
run away. The trusting seller deposits the forged money order, withdraws
his own $ to forward, sends the frame, and then two weeks later finds out
the money order is bogus when the bank dings him. Several of us have gotten
such scam offers from postings on the CR list.

object, but insist on some sort of cash or equivalent transaction (wire
transfer, postal money order or actual cash in hand) before shipping your
property.
