I have no idea what the size was for the very first pneumatic tires for-retail-sale
This is a very interesting historical note in cycling. The first Dunlop tyres races were on a 28" front and 30" rear wheel. The interesting part is they were 2" wide. Now if you can imagin some kick lining up to race Lance with a bike using Motorcycle size tyres--this might give you some picture of that first race.Solid tyres of the day varied from 1/2" on racers to 7/8" on roadesters(from Bartleet's book)Dunlop had to find someone to build him a bicycle wide enough to fit his tyres.Hume won all four races, May 18th 1889,Queen"s Collage Sports,Belfast.
