I just send a frameset from Chandler, AZ to Malta, NY via FedEx ground for $23 with $500 insurance yesterday.

So far, based on the info I have at the moment, I'm thinking that FEDEX is sometimes very picky about box-size.
Both Dale and I went to the FEDEX site and input the usual size and weight for a bike-box, and got the usual price: coast-to-coast, about 50 bucks, give or take 10 bucks, depending on exact weight, size, and value.
At my local shipping center, near down-town Los Angeles, they know me, and will cut me a little slack on the size (double-boxing can go over the limit pretty easily in my experience, although I try to avoid that).
I'm thinking that if a box is even slightly over a certain size limit, you can get hammered.
This is the only thing that explains a doubling of price! And UPS is far more picky about this than FEDEX is, and has been for years..one reason I quit using UPS...besides my experience with them as bike-destroyers.
Any other data points on this subject would be welcome, as I will be shipping a number of bikes in the coming months...
