My $00.02 worth here...
I ship a lot of stuff and have used both services. With my FedEx account, FedEx Ground (NOT FedEx Home Service) is cheaper than UPS by far. One extreme case recently was $30 vs $119! FedEx home service comes closer to UPS prices, but is usually a bit cheaper. It seems to me that each company has a little bit different formula for pricing so I usually shop around. I think FedEx Ground (which is technically NOT FedEx) is hungry to grab market share from the brownshirts, and is willing to low ball. I'm sure they will re-align prices once they have garnered market share, so I'm going to keep my options open and keep shopping around. In other words, enjoy the party, but dance near the door!.
My vote is FedEx ground.
