Stephan: I am thinking something very simple: drill and hacksaw; home stuff; same a what I would do.
First, think of where the cable attaches to a side pull brake - sort of an eyelet that bolts to the brake; and into the eyelet slides the barrel adjuster. For your Mafacs, I am proposing a straight bracket into which that eyelet bolts at the upper end. Bracket = straight piece of steel or aluminum maybe several inches tall. Larger hole in bottom for brake center bolt. Smaller hole at top for eylet from a side pull.

If the headset has the typical french sawtooth washer arrangement, you might get ~5 mm of threads back by switching the top races to something like campy that uses plain washers, and using the mafac hanger as the sole washer. If you're willing to use off-topic parts, you can get a hanger that clamps to the stem quill.
