Also, what about all the Japanese randonneur bicycles that out-Singer the Singer bicycles and out-Herse the Herses? We could also get into the nicely built American frames that were still available in the '60s - e.g. Alvin Drysdale and Dick Power. (I know there were many others but I grew up in New York City's borough of Queens where these guys were located.)
Peter, in the '70s my cousin Rob build frames that he called Tanguy and sold a lot of them in his native D.C. - your hometown, too, I think. That's because of the late Mike Schwering, who sold them at Georgetown Cycle Sport (isn't that what it was called?). I'm pretty certain that Mike sold other nicely made American frames as well.
It wasn't all Huffys and heavy weight Schwinns. Although speaking of Schwinns, there were some decent ones below the Paramount in the '70s. By the way, despite their low quality, I still see lots of 30 year old Huffys being ridden as daily transportation. Take a look in any D.C. neighborhood populated by Latin American immigrants.
