Having subscribed to Jan Heine's Vintage Bicycle Quarterly since its inception, I thought I understood that instead of tourists, it was actually the duraluminum or other industry that sponsored the many trials that spawned the innovations between the wars--primarily in the late 1930s. As I read the articles, I saw a trade between weight reduction and reliability--similar to the Aerospace industry. Lou Deeter, Orlando FL
