The saddle support was fairly common on race bikes in the 20/30s because the saddle clamp didn't hold that great and the roads were rough.

Now my question... In the full size version of the photo:

It looks like something is wrapped around the left chainstay (or both chainstays)? And it looks to me like this is where Felicien's gaze is focused? What's going on?
