I have, on a Schwinn, a Suntour barend shifter and long cage Cyclone derailler shifting a five speed freewheel. I decided I didn't like the feel and I was only using 2/3 of the lever travel. Installed the demultiplicator. Now I use most of the lever's travel. It would probably work with a 6 speed freewheel but any more I think lever would run against stop.* In a bit of over kill I have adjusters on each cable to fine tune stroke of demultiplicator arm. It appeared that it was a bad idea to mess with set screw holding front cable. *Disclaimer: don't know for sure, this bike will only ever have 5 speed freewheels.
