Howard, That's Harry Hill not Harry Hall. Harry Hill was a Pro for John bull tyres. He beat Frank Southall R.R.A record that Frank set in March 34. Harry did 1h 44m 30s on the 4th. November 1938. He rode a Royal Enfield equipped with bog standard John Bull Safety Speed tyres on Constrictor rims. The gear he road was 90". On the previous Tuesday he had a go at the record when he climbed off at 43 miles, still managed to do the first 29 miles in the hour! The record was done on the Salsburgh by-pass on the Glasgow-Edinburgh road. Jack Killingback was Hills assistant and trainer. This was Harry's first pro ride. Now Harry Hall is the Manchester based cycle shop owner. He was also a team mechanic for the British teams. Think he is the one who was at Tom Simpson's side when he died tragically on the Ventoux all those years ago. None of us will forget that horrendous day for British cycling. L.A didn't do to well on the Ventoux in the Dauphine. Is this is a sign of things to come! Know one has won a record number of tours past the age of 31. Is this an omen? The lads in the club are betting on the Russian Menchov as an outsider also Zubeldia and Sevilla. I shall probably go with Fabian Cancellera as an outside chance he can certainly time trial. Fassa are a good team and they Aitor Gonzalez and Petacchi might top five stages and Flecha looks useful as well. They are my bet for the team time trial. Take care and be lucky and the T de F show at the Trumans brewery is wonderful. The salt beef and herring bagels are recommended. Are you entering the comics Fantasy T de F this year?
Best wishes and be lucky. Michael Butler Huntingdon UK.
