My own personal preference is not to spread frames for new gruppo's. I agree with Lou that some of the features of the Ergo/STI groups are nice to have. What works for me (and YMMV) is put it on a KOF frame, or a production steel frame already setup for the newer gruppos. My daily rider is an off topic (by just a few years) Serotta running Campy 8 speed. The old Trek's and Eisentraut (wife's bike) run period correct components.
