Pic of the Day Special Another image of Wim Van Est and the ravine...
I've already posted a set of images from Wim Van Est's fall into a ravine during the 1951 Tour de France, but this one is best of all. You may have read that the Dutch team used a rope made from their spare tubulars to pull Van Est back up to the road, and the tubies were stretched so much that the team was left with no spares and had to quit. Well, this image shows thirteen tubulars stretching from the road to the rider, and that doesn't include the ones people are holding onto at the top (out of frame). From "Cyclisme 1952", April 1952.
