In 1981 when I ordered my custom Marinoni, the shop tried to talk me into 126mm six speed as "all the bikes today" were built that way. But, thanks to an unhappy experience with a Trek frame and a Rigida 1320 rimmed 6 speed rear wheel (wheel needed truing every 30 miles, and I was a LOT lighter then), I wanted the stronger 120 mm 5 speed. I guess that makes me an early retro geezer.

So is it fair to say that six speed started popping up on the radar around 1972 led principally in the US by the Raleigh Pro, and by 1981 the battle was pretty much over?
