Lou:

Now that you mention it, I think there are a few other errors in the statement on the CR Zeus page, in addition to the founder's name.

Luis Ocana did not win the Tour against Merckx in 1971, as stated -- 1971 was the year he started well against Merckx but crashed. Ocana actually did win the tour in 1973 (but in Merckx's absence), riding for Bic on an orange Motobecane as well as an unpainted Speedwell climbing bike. I have heard it suggested that he might have used a Zeus freewheel but I have no proof of that; certainly all the identifiable equipment is Campy with drillium.

Ocana did race on the Zeus Superser team in the tours of '75 (abandonded with saddle sores) and '76 (finished way out of the money: 14th?). The only saving grace for Zeus in '76 was that one of Ocana's teammates was allowed a solo breakaway on a stage that bordered Spain, and it turned out to be some kind of record due to the enormous time gap.

The oldest Zeus bikes I've seen so far appear to be from the mid sixties (the grey bikes with "Zeus Professional" in gold on the downtube). Anybody seen one more ancient than that?
