I'm seeking ideas for really cool late 70s, early 80s gear with which to build up my Ron Stout frame. Here's my current thinking. I've got a 1974 Jack Taylor that I've had since it was new that I'm going to restore with Nuovo Record gear. I've got an early 80s Colnago Super with a mix of era-appropriate Colnago pantographed items and Campy Super Record. My recent 1973 Colin Laing purchase I'll restore with 1st generation Dura Ace. So I've got those three major product line bases covered. Which leads me back to -- what to do with my late 70s/early 80s Ron Stout?
It's a gorgeous frame (to my eyes, at least). Clean, lovely lines -- Prugnat lugs, Cinelli fork crown, Cinelli-style fast back seat stays. I could do the obvious and build it with Super Record, but I'm thinking since the Colnago Super has that covered, I'd like to do something different. But I don't know what.
I've got a sweet wheelset with Phil Wood hubs and Mavic MA-40 rims for which I have no current plans. They've got me thinking about using them as a starting point for a "cream of the crop" selection of gear other than Campy or Shimano. But I was out of touch with the industry during that period and must admit to a major gap in my knowledge (one of many such gaps).
So I ask the CR list's input. What would you pick, if you wanted to build a high end circa 1980 frame with high end gear other than Campy or Shimano?
Thanks!
