When I was selling bikes out of my garage as a teenager around 1974-1977, I recall my distributor handled a Rixe model. Never sold one, but it was at the "top" of the line he handled, probably retailing around $199. I, too, recall them as German.
I also sold a few (one to myself as my first 10 speed) Steiger Sprinters (ever hear of those?). Pretty ordinary W. German road bike, equivalent to Raleigh Grand Prix. These came from the same importer as the Rixe, IIRC.

I always thought Rixe was german. They still produce; I believe in Stuttgart, but I will check up on that.
