A Campy NR or Zeus Criterium will handle a 14-28 with 52-42, but you have to get the chain length just right. With 52-36 the large-large and small-small combos will definitely not be usable, although you probably don't use these much anyway. And you still might have to drop to a 14-26 rear as well.

Anybody know the widest possible gear ranges for these derailleurs?

Can a Nuovo Record, for example, handle 52/36 front and 14/28 rear?
