Hi John: FWIW, I am about 170 lbs. soaking wet, and 6'2" - I generally ride a 60 cm c-t road frame (+/- 1 cm. or so, depending on the specific geometry of the frame in question). I really like the rigidity of a couple SP framesets that I have. They are stiff but not harsh in my opinion (steel is real!). SLX might be a little soft for what it sounds like you are planning - but it depends on your individual riding style and priorities. SLX was created in large part due to the advent of braze-on front derailleurs (or so I was told years ago). You could also mix-and-match, using (for example) an SP downtube, chainstays, and forkblades, with the rest being SLX. The Super Record braze-on front der. debuted in about 1982, so if that issue is all that's keeping you from OS tubing, fear not! (Although I have not a single (single - there is the tandem...) OS frameset in my fleet and know almost zip about OS tubing...). Regards, Greg "skinny tube" Parker Dexter, Michigan http://www.bicycleclassics.com

Looking at SP tubing in the Ceeway catalog:

1) The butting profile looks stepped, not tapered. Is this right? Seems crazy. 2) The DT is listed as 635mm long. That seems short particularly for a tube set that is intended for larger frames. Anyone know if that is accurate?

I've forwarded the questions to Ceeway but thought I'd check here too.

For a 170# recreational rider who wants a very durable, very long lasting frameset that may see the occasional rough/gravel road but who doesn't want truly unnecessary weight: Would those of you with direct experience suggest SP or SLX (no other tubes/diameters are being considered). I need to build a frame based on conventional 1 and 1.125" tubes for an old Super Record groupset unless:

Campy: Did they make a super record ft der in the early 80s that was not a clamp on but which attached to a braze on tab instead, and could then be used on a 1.25" ST?

Molto interested in the answers.
