Mark,

I live over in Greenville, SC and ride on Saturday's with Carolina Triathlon on Woodruff Road. I finished a 70 mile ride yesterday to Gray Court, and appreciated the steel frame when riding over Carolina Cobblestones (cracked pavement shaped like cobblestones). My friends on Al frames were telling me they were hating life when riding this area.

Using downtube shifters, I have also noticed the upshift problem you described on hills. I have good luck with tightening the shifter whenever this occurs.

If this does not help, this problem may be due to the worn delrin piece in the shifter. I don't know if you can get new ones, however a good source may be wwwcyclery (sp?) http://ebay.com/<blah> or Branford Bike in Massachusetts. I also frequently see NOS Campy Victory shifters on Ebay for about $10. There are probably many other vendors that could supply this piece.

I also agree with Brian Bayliss, ride the crap out of it, just periodically check the 20+ year old components for metal fatigue. I would personally also do this on a newer bike as well.

Thanks,

Chris
