My puzzlement is over the springs that encase the dropout adjuster screws. What purpose do they serve? Once the wheelhub is locked in, I can't see the "spring" doing anything useful. Greg Brooks, Ridgetop,TN

Hi Greg:

Those springs create enough friction in the threads (and against the two parts: dropout and screw) to keep the screws where you set them. If they weren't present, the screws could potentially loosen (back off rearward) when you rode the bike, causing different "set points" the next time you R & R'ed the rear wheel. Of course, once things get a bit rusty/gunky in there, usually too little friction isn't the issue, but were talkin' fresh clean threads here...!
