.............heard today that well known British wheelbuilder (and three times Tour de France mechanic) Ken Bird died aged 66 last weekend after spending the last few years out of the business, it's a great loss to the British cycling heritage, he started life as an apprentice at the Claud Butler factory in Clapham in the 50's, then honed his craft as a mechanic and master wheelbuilder to many top names in the 60's/70's & 80's including Tom Simpson/Alf Engers/Dave Holliday/Clive Stuart Racing team etc. .............do any list members have any recollections of "Birdy"?

his cremation takes place at the Eltham Crematorium (SE London) on 7th.Feb
