I have attached the ebay post of my Tesch built 83 Masi GC..Like mine I think yours is Columbus SL, Henry James Lugs. Pics load slow, use zoom -ebay enlarge no longer active Serial number in this ebay post. Sold by a listmember (before I joined), built by a listmember, later correct SL pedals bought from Matteo keeping it all in the family.

Various comments in emails from Masi Main men (also Matteo)including Tesch, Baylis (he left before 83), and Allen (who painted them) copied below:

Matteo,

American production colors used from 1972 to whenever:

First two baking enamels are of Italian manufacture: Yellow Yellow with gold pearl top coat

These are PPG baking enamel (200 Celsius): dark blue metallic - Imron 44426u is very, very close match light blue metallic turquoise orange red silver metallic gun metal grey metallic champagne metallic

These were Imron: California Burgundy - just a single Imron toner Black - Imron 99U White - Imron toner

Anyone else remember any I've forgotten?

Later,

Jim Allen

Mark,

Yellow was probably the Italian baking enamel without the gold topcoat. The base or primer coat was a very tough and tenacious primer from PPG I

only knew by its product number: UC40485. Had to be baked to 425 degrees

Fahrenheit. Top coat was probably the PPG clear coat.

Of course, I don't recall the exact time we changed paints, so it could all be Imron to....easiest way to check is to look for the basecoat. PPG

primer was a pale greenish yellow. Dupont's Corlar Primer is dark reddish brown.

Is that enough paint trivia yet?

Later,

Jim Allen highly recommend TA pedal washers for all NR and SR cranks. I have been using them for many years. I think they help prevent this problem. They are available from Harris Cyclery.

What kind of fork crown does it have? If it has a chrome crown, new continental oval fork blades, and a Masi insignia cast in the crown, then I built it. Responding to pics- These are new continental oval. all castings by Henry James. Made in San Marcos CA. I do not live in CA. I live in WI. where I am from. PPG primer, likely imron paint. Yeah I would dig a Mexico No, yours is Columbus. Your frame is all SL if it is the one we talked about. We can micromanage the subtleties all we want, but as I stated a few posts ago, a builder of superlative product only uses superlative materials. You have absolutely nothing whatsoever to worry about with respect to the quality of the tubing in your bike. We all enjoy the debate, the history. But understand that it is all good. There are some folks who are convinced of this, or convinced of that, based on what a rider rides, or what a builder uses, without actually knowing the truth that lies behind it all. You are not going to wear your bike out. Anyway bikes are like cars, the more of them you own, the fewer miles that accumulate on any one of them, so if you are worried about it, buy a few more. I like my cars just like my bikes, full campy. Dave Tesch No, No, No the fork blades that are indigenous to Reynolds are continental oval, new continental oval can be had from any company who makes tubing. And that is what you have, Columbus SL new continental oval. DT DT DT DT Davidtesch@aol.com

San Marcos and Carlsbad are very near one another. The original location was Carlsbad. The MC stayed with the markings until about 1984; even though the frames were actually built in Rancho Santa Fe and San Marcos for quite some time after the original location was relenquished in about 1978. Tesch built the frame you have in the fourth quarter of 1983, frame #28. That would be just before the change to the "SMC" in the serial numbers. Relax, the earth is not changing its' axis of rotation. Everything is in order.

Why Matteo I did not know till a minute ago that you too were a CR
