I have barends on a couple bikes, 25" Raleigh and Schwinn so you know there's a long run of cable. The older housing can have a enough friction to cause problems on a barend setup. I think the metal housing is especially bad. If you can find housing liner that fits the old stainless housing that might be ok. I use lined brake cable housing* and good quality cable. Any lube is very light with teflon. I run under the tape up to near stem. I tape it down in a few spots with electrical tape once I get routing worked out. (I've found that if I place housing so it fits in gap under second finger joints it's very much like an anatomical fit.-This is for when riding on top of bars.) Pay attention to properly finishing any cuts in housing and liner so as to avoid drag. Use ferrules where needed.

* Even though it's modern housing it comes in black, white, grey, and some colors. No one will know it's not period correct! Now if you really want to cheat you can use a single groove bar to help hide cable housing - but you didn't hear it from me. ; )
