It seems as though drilling has shown up everywhere in my life recently...a friend broght his early Trek over for some extensive maintenence, and we discovered that the handlebar had been drilled, SERIOUSLY drilled. big, gaping holes. The right side of the bar was pinched in about half an inch, so we had to toss it, a pretty Belleri. (I thought they were Phillipe, but this one somehow morphed into Belleri.) The second bike was a gift, the previously mentioned (in a previous post) Masserati. I discovered that the handlebar had been drilled, along with the TTT stem (to bury the computer wire.) What a shame. The third is a recently acquired Zunow. The bike is completely original (first gen. 6 speed Shimano 600 index.) But the bar has been drilled in some lame attempt to make it "prettier", or more aero, or....whatever. What a waste. That little ridge under the tape never bothered me at all. In fact, it's what I always rest my fingertips on when I'm in that position. Kind of reassuring, that ridge.

Also works very nicely if you use a brake cable itself. Since they are stiffer you can work them through quite easily and the just slip the housing over it. Once you have the housing through, whip out the brake cable and, viola! I rode a bike for several years when I decided to change the brake levers to aero ones. To my surprise I found holes under the tape which I then went on to use for my levers. Looked very clean and surived my 225 lbs. sprints very nicely. SR somethingorother 44cm.
