Re: [CR]Was: Pre-Columbian Cultures =?ISO-8859-1?B?oE5vdzogIE1hc2k=?=

Eugene Powell asked:

Is this some sort of fiendishly cleaver build up to an argument about which flavor of California Masi what group rode to get here?

Eugene, the California Masi arrived in a migration to the U.S., not unlike the migration of peoples from Siberia to Alaska. Although the California Masi used slightly different points from Clovis and the Mound Builders, there is a distinctness that is evident enough so that Archaeologists have no problem identifying the culture. The earliest Masi, the Carlsbad, were hunter gatherers who had not learned the value of agriculture. They therefore failed to develop complex social structure and were defeated and became extinct, although DNA tests and archaeological evidence shows the influence that the Carlsbad Masi had on subsequent evolutionary development of the "point". There is also supposition that the "missing link" still lives in Southern California, although he is rarely seen in the wild. He reportedly still makes points, but they require so much hand labor that they are virtually impossible to obtain. I will present a paper on this subject, complete with DNA tree and slideshow at the upcoming Cirque, so be sure to get your reservations in now! Lou Deeter, Orlando FL
