Or a spring in the upper pivot like Simplex, which Shimano copied for their derailleurs since very early. When the new Dura-Ace stuff came out in 1985 with springs in both pivots still, and the slant-parallelogram from SunTour, *and* working SIS shifting, the writing was definitely on the wall for Campy: innovate or die. And I think after a few false starts they've managed to find enough of a niche to survive anyway.
