They rode a René Herse tandem on their "honeymoon." Set a new mixed tandem record of 68 hours, despite some bike problem (broken bottom bracket, I believe). In 1951, another Herse team set a record of 49 hours and a bit, which remained unbroken until 1999 - new equipment or not!

They look pretty beat after that much time on the road. I remember they took 42 hours or so for the race. They beat the previous record, set in the course of the last PBP (1931) by Hubert Opperman, by almost 10 hours. Derailleurs vs. single-speed on a very hilly course...

If they had been randonneurs, they'd get "same time." Randonneur events can have more than one winner. That may be the main difference at the front... -- Jan Heine, Seattle Editor/Publisher Vintage Bicycle Quarterly c/o Il Vecchio Bicycles 140 Lakeside Ave, Ste.
