+++++++++++++++++ If these are for the Gitane Tandem you also wrote about, I'd not be very encouraging. I once bought a full set of Specialized tandem cranks for $75, NOS, and that is a bunch less hassle than the helicoils. Less sacrilege, too, and let's face it: Gitane tandems don't need high-class components to be happy. I'g guess from your post that you have an early one, before they went to TA cranks stock. If you insist on doing it, count the teeth on the existing transfer cogs (left side). If even, stay with even # of teeth, and vice versa. The eccentric on my T&C Schwinns didn't have enough throw to give any adjustment if you tried to use odd-number of teeth transfer wheels; did fine with evens. Strange, but true. I learned the hard way.
