I believe that the cones races and ball bearing are the same(at least they are for hubs produced in the same approximate time). Its the shell and the locknuts that are different. The track hub shell is wider and there is a left handed thread area for a proper cog lock ring.

The rear spacing for a while was 110mm for track bikes. In the early 70's I think it got bumped up to 120mm.

If your doing fixed gear you really should use a track hub. If you're selling track bikes without it I hope you get a waiver of liability from the buyer or at least have hand brakes on the bike. Its a REALLY scary and dangerous experience to spin off your cog and psuedo lockring from a road hub. I survived, skin and bones intact but I learned my lesson. Direct experience is vivid!!!! My bike at the time, a 1972 sky blue and white (Carlton Team Colors) Raleigh Pro, was a true track bike without hand brake or drillings to accomodate them. What can I say. I was a naive teenager.

The wider track shell also allows the chain to be parallel to the frame centerline. Using a road hub could increase the wear on chainrings.
