I think some of the credit for the improved shifting from the SLJ/retrofriction combo was down to the shifters, hence their popularity even among otherwise dyed in the wool Campaphiles. Wasn't the usual pulley wheel swap back then to put Suntour pullies on your Campagnolo derailleur? I've seen that one; I've never seen Campagnolo pulleys on another make of RD.
