Normally eBay is the realm of restraint and common sense ;^) so why are these rims causing a bidding frenzy?

The Mavic rims from this era are plenty rare and are light, cool, and historic w/ eyelets and all... but would the wired-on (clincher) rims be seen on high-end bikes? How would they compare to the wired-on rims from Fiamme and Super Champion? What tires would be seen on these?
