"i have not seen that kind of "bait and switch" tactic before on ebay. perhaps "bait and hope they don't read the rest of the description" would be a better label. either way, has anybody else seen this same type of auction tactic before?

i think dirk has no choice but to pay for his ONE shifter - damn, that's gotta hurt - after all, he can't accuse the seller of not disclosing the terms in the description (he can, however, accuse him of being misleading, and may want to bring this matter to ebay's attention).

i know dirk isn't the only one on this list guilty of not reading an auction description carefully and thoroughly before bidding. i did it recently for a relatively small loss of $65. thanks to dirk for outing himself and reminding us of the need to be wary of impulse/too good to be true buying on ebay.

Exactly, the seller is trying to avoid ebay fees. This is a violation of ebay rules that ebay actually cares about and will act on. If reported, ebay will cancel all his auctions. Dirk is not obligated to go through with the sale if he does not want to. Usually sellers will do this with insane shipping costs, I've seen it happen many times, and ebay usually clamps down on these guys because it's their money (unlike most of the other rampant violations scattered through the site that make them money).
