John... if you're lubricating S/A hub gears, I'd strongly suggest you stick to real S/A oil. This is still sold in the UK as rebranded Raleigh Cycle Oil and is on their website (which is how it was first sold anyway) or Halfords brand. This has been a protracted and tedious discussion on other sites. I strongly believe there is a difference between S/A oil and other lubricants. You can also get old S/A oil on eBay, it comes up frequently. If you are desparate, I can even sell you a bottle from my cache... just don't use 3-in-1 for S/A hubs!!

But if you're using it for general lubrication, I would think any good oil would work fine like Phil Wood Tenacious Oil. For chains, I much prefer the newer synthetics like ProLink Chain Lube.
