Not just a fixed gear behind him, but a track bike with no brakes.

Could you imagine riding 3000+ miles with no brakes?

I tried out my new track rig the other week on a quiet Sunday and when I got home I straight away installed a front brake. So for someone with a derailleur bike to nip a track bike at the line is something to be commended-- for the track bike rider! Although I'm sure there were some long days of commraderie on the road and agreements to ride together for the shelter and mere survival.

Seattle, WA. Brake on the front, but fixed anyway.
