To which Ted added: Seth is correct. I remember when Alf Letourner did his ride cross country a whole bunch, like about 40 of us rode out and met him about 20 miles from Chicago, and rode with him as escort into town as part of the fun and excitement of the occasion.

This reminds me of a ride that I took back in 1980-81. Prior to starting college, I took a year off and rode from Ottawa, Canada, crossing into the US at Detroit, down to Florida, across the South to San Diego, then up along the Pacific to Port Angeles where I caught a ferry over to Vancouver Island before riding back across most of Canada, returning to my starting point in Ottawa. As the ride had a fund-raising purpose, along the way I was met and/or led out by many hardy groups who were helping my effort out. I was escorted by cyclists, horse riders, motorcycles and antique cars. The most colorful one was made up of a few police cars and a motorcycle policeman in Silver City, New Mexico. I even got to sleep in the local jail that night...
