"...back in the day..." - May I ask you to dust-off recollection and be a bit more specific of time periods ? Thanks. Richard Cielec Chicago, Illinois

If you back up the bike with a crossed chain, it will bend nearly every part in the derailleur, The double sprung Rally shifts adequately and is much more robust. My dream derailleur would work like a Duopar and be built like a Nuovo Record,

A popular derailleur on high end touring bkes back in the day was the Sun Tour Cyclone GT. It's probably the best compromise in performance and durability. A little later, Sun Tour made a cool looking derailleur called the Superbe Tech GT. It replaced the parallelogram with a sealed box and internal linkage (ie. piece of coat hanger wire). The cage had a second sprung pivot inside of the top roller. This gear is a real piece of crap. After a ride in the rain, the second pivot would fill up with grit and stop working. It was really fiddly taking the thing apart to clean, and it would never work properly again. The funny thing was that this derailleur was marketed for it's bad weather performance.
