Re: Shipping bikes

I sometimes ship a vintage bike without a box at all, especially when hopping from country to country, where finding boxes and packing can be more difficult. I have always found carriers very helpful with old bikes.

However, when I took my Hetchins to Portugal, I did have some trouble. The precious cargo was shipped by British Airways without incident (as they had done many times before). Unfortunately, the Portugese baggage handler reversed back and crushed the front wheel. Mercifully, the forks were undamaged, but I had to get a new wheel. British Airways - bless their lofty souls - paid for a top quality wheel, a night in a hotel, and they also gave me a 100 pound voucher.

A box would not have saved the wheel. Not suggesting anyone does the same though.
