Subject: [CR]Mystery bike...

Subject: old racing bike in very poor condition in need of ID; no transfers left; maybe 40s or 50s vintage. Head Badge: Little man on bike with drops racing towards us at 3/4 angle; orange and green colors, script says "Ceste..." and can't make out the rest. Geometry: exact degrees unknown, but looks early racing bike. Steering head: no markers, looks French. Lugs: Chrome, but not much left; rear seat tube lug has a rectilear slit on both sides. Tubes: Heavy and undistinguished; no sign of transfer left. Front Derailleur Lever: three inch long lever with bulb on end mounted on seat tube; Simplex. Rear Deraileur Lever: Simples mounted on down tube. Cable routing: holes in tubes to route cables inside. Stem and handlebars: Ambrosio and look original. Cranks: look like old French stuff, but no markings left, too much rust. Pedals: replacements Wheels: replacements. Brakes: replacements. Paint: black paint slapped over what was once fire engine red.

Not much to go on, huh. Was ridden for years in Honolulu by a bohemian in "The Jungle." Salt air took its toll. The only hint I've been able to trace is the word "Ceste." I found it in a dictionary for some weird language in a province straddling Portugal and Spain. Help! I can't bring myself to dump this rusted hunk of junk in the trash. I just have a hunch about it.

Best regards, Don Wilson Los Olivos, CA
