Subject: [CR]In Defense of MAFAC Squeeling

Some years ago I converted my 1970 Mercier to a single speed commuter, and the MAFAC brakes with 4 dot pads were wonderful for clearing the path. Part of my route was on a 'bike path/route' that was also the sidewalk downtown Columbus, OH, and often at intersections the pedestrians would be standing on the ramps awaiting a Walk signal. I'd just tap the brakes (safer than moving my hands to a far less effective bell) and would instantly gain their attention. Fast movement followed, and I had a clear ramp!

I've retired the bike due to a possible unfound crack (too much 'creaking'), but still use the MAFAC brakes on my Rambouillet. Better pads have reduced the noise, and I suppose I could play with the toe-in by filing the spacers, but I don't care that much. Gives my ride-mates something to complain about.
