"Some years ago I converted my 1970 Mercier to a single speed commuter, an d the MAFAC brakes with 4 dot pads were wonderful for clearing the path."

Ron, I've found the same thing.... that Mafac squeel puts the fear of God into all and sundry, like a Caravelle with reverse thrusters on. Sadly m y local shop rebuilt the Mafacs on my PX-10 and they don't squeel at all now . Not a peep. Shame really.

Appropos the discussion about those "dots" on Campagnolo derailleurs and the general finish of this product vs. others. Absolutely! They always beat French components in aesthetics and finish. The NR brake is typically Italian in its aesthetic harmony not to mention primo workmanship. Lovel y. And it works very well, too. One got more tired of the "Campy Crowd" in the 1970s than one could criticise the actual goods. Mafac Racers with their

crude finished and stamping just don't hold a candle to the Italian stuff.

Having said that, I'll never concede Campagnolo made a derailleur during the CR timeframe that could match top-end Simplex in how well and smoothly

it shifted. Not even close. But again, the NR derailleur is SO well finished and just looks "right". Sad to say compared to its Simplex competition, it's like a Olivetti 22 typewriter... it's better to lo ok at than use.
