Before I spent the big bucks necessary for even a modest spindle replacement from Phil, I'd at least do a test-fit with some UN-XX bottom bracket I had laying around to determine the needs for my frame. A little measuring and calculating should net you a spec for a bb.

I've used Stronglight 93's with their original 118mm spindles and found the chainline to be suited to my 126mm (7sp) and 130mm (8sp) spacings. Depending on how many cogs you're using and how close to the dropout your freewheel can reside, a slightly narrower bb might serve well here, imo, if the chainrings are well clear of the chainstays. Alternately, for triples, a same-length spindle with a bit less offset might be best, overall.

The Stronglight taper is smaller than Shimano's, even the slightest bit smaller than Campy's. I have seen some catalog listings of Phil's taper offerings and found them confusing. In no cases that I have seen are Campy's tapers equal to the size of Shimano's, the effective lengths are always at least a couple of mm shorter than measured length when comparing the two.

The triple spindle, for the 93 at least, has at least 5mm added to the drive side only. Very asymmetrical, so I like to use other bb's, that reduce the chainline by a few mm, if clearances allow.
