I just did one. It was dated 1975 so it was stuck on very well. I used a hair dryer to soften it up then did the bit with the fingernails. It came off surprisingly easy and without damage to the corner of a decal which was under the tag. It did come off in tiny pieces though, never got soft enough to just peel the whole thing off. Plastic scrapers could be used instead of finger nails but might be harder to control.
