Subject: [CR]Introducing a newbie, me

I'm a very enthusiastic newbie who last rode and patched in the late '60's and early '70's. If anything, my enthusiasm and respect for the craft and fun of lightweight and touring bicycles are an anthem to Spence Wolf of the Cupertino Bike Shop, who in his time coddled and greeted riders in his shop and on the road down Hwy. 1 on the California coast as he guided his truck and saluted customers. It was from this gentleman that I picked up a fitted Cinelli and Alex Singer for my dual passions: controlled speed and touring. These goodies went to fund grad school, but I still keep my dusty Mondia still outfitted for cyclocross, a fun experience in which I may have set new lows for performance. But Mondia bikes are tough, a little heavy, and when outfitted for bad roads just the thing for a grubby town like Stockton. In keeping with the spirit of travel, in the mid-70's I visited the Mercier plant in St. Etienne in the company of my employer who was out to buy a Gauthier cyclocross motorcycle. At that time the plant was known almost exclusively as a good mid-priced, pop priced mass maker whose newly high end bike was a still modestly priced Eddy Merckx. As an aside, I still have a set of Campagnolo chain protectors used on cyclocross setups. Kept them as backup to the ones I have on my bike, but never used. If there's significant interest, I'll put those and a couple of Grifo cyclocross NOS tires up on eBay. I sold a couple of Campestres and felt interest in cyclocross may not be very significant.
