Dear Lynn,

Yes, you might need to have the steer tube cut and rethreaded, unless it is correct for the headset you want to use. Here the headset stack height is a critical dimension, as is the head tube length.

I would also want to look at the fork length and the fork offset. If the fork length (from the headset lower race seat to the dropout axle center) is not right, the tire clearance, brake length, and bike "angle of attack" will be different from original. An additional interaction is that the length, in combination with the fork offset and the head tube angle, determines the trail, and that is a big part of how the bike will handle.

Problem here is, the end result is subjective. No-one can tell you up front what will or won't be acceptable to you.

I would get the fork and start playing with it. I do know that many shops are able to adjust fork offset by bending the blades, if you need to add or reduce trail. I had this done. I also found that the stack height of the lower half of the headset is not uniform across headsets.

Sounds like fun!

I have located a nice chrome Guerciotti fork for a reasonable price. It is for a larger frame. Would I be able to have the steerer tube (correct terminology?) cut down and threaded for use on a smaller frame?

Thanks
