As a youngster I attended a Catholic school which required us to wear uniforms. These uniforms could only be purchased from one local supplier (I think he was on Ramona St--could be wrong) by the name of "Dick Felt." That was his REAL name.

Anyhow, the trousers we wore for our uniforms were made of a very thin corduroy material. The time period here was early through late 70's. So as you can imagine, the pants had big bell bottoms (quite fitting for the most gutless decade in history.)

We actually had to ride bicycles to school in those days. We didn't have obese soccer-Mom's in 2-ton exempt SUV's to cart us around everywhere.

Sure I had problems with my pants getting caught in BMX bicycles as a child. But it wasn't until I reached my early teens that I began riding an old Raleigh 3-speed to school when the real problems set in.

We neglected to wear the leg clips as kids because they did not look cool. One day after school we were racing our bicycles. I was pedaling feverishly when suddenly my Dick Felt's became ensnared between the chain and chainring of my Raleigh. I was part way through a down-stroke on the right hand (drive) side when the incident occcurred. This mishap caused me to veer hard to the right and crash into a bush. But the worst part was that the chainring teeth tore my Dick Felt's such that the entire right side of my leg was exposed up to my belt thereby showing the white briefs I was sporting.

When I got home my Mother went ballistic on me for ruining the pants. Her first question to me was: "Were you wearing your leg clip?"
