Dale asked:

Is vaseline a good/best prescribed complement to the leather washer?

A petroleum product like Vaseline is NOT good for a pump leather.

Ideally use camphor grease but a vegetable grease or Crisco will work.

You could also use one of the shoe leather treatments such as you might find at REI or a mountaineering shop.
