I agree with these characterizations of bicycling and bicycles. I don't think that they characterize a special interest in vintage lightweight bicycles, which is a hobby.

Hobby?... HOBBY!!!

Now you guys are startin' to make me angry! Anyone that can refer to this as a HOBBY... geeeze!

"When man invented the bicycle he reached the peak of his attainments. Here was a machine of precision and balance for the convenience of man. And (unlike subsequent inventions for man's convenience) the more he used it, the fitter his body became. Here, for once, was a product of man's brain that was entirely beneficial to those who used it, and of no harm or irritation to others. Progress should have stopped when man invented the bicycle." --Elizabeth West, Hovel in the Hills

Albert Einstein's most acclaimed discovery - The Theory of Relativity - came to him while riding his bike. While pedaling at night, Einstein observed that the bobbing beam cast from his head lamp always traveled at the same speed, whether he was crusing at a quick clip or coasting to a stop. The theory - that light from a moving source has the same velocity as light from a stationary source - was born on that ride. "I thought of it while riding my bicycle," remains one of Einstein's most renouned quotes.

"The bicycle has a soul. If you are able to love it as it deserves, it will give you emotions you will never forget." --Mario Cipollini

"The bicycle is the noblest invention of mankind." --William Saroyan

"The future's all yours, ya lousy bicycles!" --Paul Newman as "Butch Cassidy"

"When I see an adult on a bicycle, I do not despair for the future of the human race." --H.G. Wells

"Cycling retro looks wacko to me...I don't get it. What's with guys in their 20s and 30s, in the prime of life, lost in nostalgia?" --Maynard Hershon

"A ride in its saddle is the perfection of motion and the acme of gentle exercise. Once there, a man or woman wants to be there most of their time. The desire grows. And this is the reason why bicycling is not a fad, but something that is going to last so long as men and women have legs." --editorial in Brooklyn Life in 1895

"A 10-mile commute by bicycle requires 350 calories of energy...The same trip in the average American car uses 18,600 calories." --Worldwatch Paper 90; The Bicycle: Vehicle for a Small Planet; Marcia Lowe.

"Too bad, so sad!" --Paul Teutel, Sr.
