With a boot in my mouth and shaking in it (it's not too often I de-lurk) I'm going to face the gods down and say you're all off the mark. Close, but off the mark. It's an AVOCATION...pure and simple, kind of. Avocation as in (archaic): a calling away: DIVERSION, DISTRACTION; or (modern) "a subordinate occupation pursued in addition to one's regular work esp. for enjoyment: HOBBY (ach!) Then again, there might be a few of you in which it is a VOCATION: "a summons from God to an individual...to undertake the obligations and perform the duties of a particular task," e.g., collecting vintage bikes. I divide us into two groups (because I feel like it): enthusiasts and aficionados. It's more of a spectrum though, with aficianados being those with more time in the endeavor and money to garner knowledge and goodies; and enthusiasts being those of us with more drool than anything else.
