SUBLIMATION

Not as in chemistry, rather psychology: Having modified the natural expression of an impulse (e.g., passion, obsession, even fetish) in a socially acceptable manner. Vintage lightweights draw or magnetize a range of emotions and/or behavioral patterns (spending, hoarding, idling, reminiscing, etc.) from their collectors that otherwise might be ill-spent or misapplied elsewhere in life's arena, or individually in our own shallow recesses. By sublimating so many instinctual impulses towards bike collecting (and riding), we have achieved something of common value and pride.

"To every life there comes a time supreme; One day, one night, one morning, or noon, One freighted hour, one moment opportune, One rift through which sublime fulfillments gleam." Opportunity by Mary Ashley Townsend (1836-1901)
